18 May – Turkmenistan Constitution and State Flag Day

Turkmenistan Constitution and State Flag Day has been observed on May 18 since 2018. Although the two holidays were celebrated on separate dates for some years, in October 2017 the government decided to combine them into a single Turkmenistan national holiday.

The young country’s constitution was adopted on May 18, 1992 at the 14th meeting of the Supreme Council of Turkmenistan. It forms the legal foundations of sovereign Turkmenistan and presents the norms for national legislation and international human and civil law. A solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Constitution in Ashgabat is held each year in commemoration of this day.

The flag of Turkmenistan was approved on February 19, 1992. It symbolizes the triumph of the national spirit and the independence of the state. Now after the flower-laying ceremony in Ashgabat on May 18, a delegation proceeds to the main square, where the state flag is raised on a 133-meter-high flagpole, one of the tallest of its kind in the world.

Throughout the country, special theatrical performances and concerts are held for Turkmenistan Constitution and State Flag Day.
