Yuzarlik – The Ancient Turkmen Ritual of Protection and Healing

In the heart of Turkmenistan’s desert lands, there grows a humble yet sacred plant known as Yuzarlik (harmala or wild rue).
For centuries, it has been burned in Turkmen homes, not just as a herb, but as a spiritual guardian. The roots of this phenomenon go back to pre-Islamic times.

According to ancient beliefs, illness is not only physical — it is brought by negative energy, the evil eye, or wandering spirits.
To cleanse the space, protect the family, and bring healing, Turkmen people burn dried yuzarlik while reciting prayers and walking through their homes. The smoke, aromatic and thick, is believed to chase away unseen forces and restore balance.

Used especially for:

  • Cleansing after illness
  • Protecting newborns and brides
  • Healing from bad dreams or unexplained sadness
  • Shielding against the evil eye

Even today, you’ll find yuzarlik hanging at the entrances of traditional homes, tied into bundles, or smoldering at ceremonies.
This ritual continues to be an essential part of Turkmen cultural heritage, deeply rooted in the spiritual wisdom of the Silk Road.
